Functional Dry Needling

Services Category

Target Pain. Release Tension. Restore Function.

We offer Functional Dry Needling (FDN) as part of our advanced physiotherapy services to help relieve muscle pain, reduce tightness, and improve movement.

What Is Functional Dry Needling?

Functional Dry Needling involves the use of thin, sterile needles gently inserted into specific trigger points or dysfunctional muscle areas.
Unlike acupuncture, which focuses on traditional energy pathways, dry needling is based on modern anatomy and neuromuscular science.

When the needle stimulates the muscle, it helps:

  • Release muscle tension and knots
  • Improve blood flow , oxygen delivery and recovery
  • Decrease pain and inflammation
  • Restore normal muscle activation and function

Many patients notice immediate relief, improved movement, and decreased pain after just a few sessions.

Conditions Treated with Dry Needling

Dry needling can effectively treat a wide range of musculoskeletal and movement-related conditions, including:

  • Neck and back pain
  • Shoulder and rotator cuff injuries
  • Tennis or golfer’s elbow
  • Hip, knee, and leg pain
  • Sciatica and nerve-related pain
  • Headaches and jaw tension (TMJ)
  • Muscle strains and chronic tightness
  • Sports and repetitive strain injuries
Benefits of Functional Dry Needling

Safe, Skilled, and Effective

Our physiotherapists are trained in Functional Dry Needling techniques.
Before treatment, we conduct a comprehensive assessment to ensure dry needling is appropriate for your condition and integrate it with other therapies such as manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation, or massage therapy for optimal results.

Post-Treatment Care

To minimize side effects and optimize recovery:

  • Apply gentle movement, stretching, or heat after needling.
  • Avoid vigorous exercise for 24 hours in treated areas.
  • Encourage hydration to assist in metabolic recovery.
  • Advise patients to monitor for persistent redness, swelling, or pain beyond 48 hours (report if occurs).
Common & Expected Side Effects

Most side effects are mild, temporary, and self-limiting, lasting from a few hours to 2–3 days.

  • Local muscle soreness: Feels like post-exercise soreness, usually within 24–48 hours.
  • Minor bleeding or bruising: From small capillary punctures.
  • Temporary pain or discomfort at insertion site. : Mild aggravation of pain before improvement (a normal healing response).
  • Fatigue or light-headedness: Brief dizziness may occur due to autonomic nervous system response.
  • Small hematoma formation: Minor blood collection under the skin, typically harmless.
  • Nerve irritation: Tingling or numbness if a nerve is contacted (should resolve quickly).

Rare (But Documented) Side Effects

  • Fainting or vasovagal reaction: Due to anxiety, low blood sugar, or needle sensitivity.
  • Infection: Very rare with proper sterile technique and single-use needles.
